Our Mites teams consist of players with birth year 2013 and under. All games and practices will be played on half-ice. This shrinks down the size of the ice to better reflect the size of the players and helps to build critical hockey skills. Half-ice hockey has many benefits: Players will get to touch the puck much more often, score more goals, goalies face more shots, etc. Even higher-level players face more of a challenge because players must learn real puck protection skills instead of relying on breakaways. And it’s fun!

Mites play in a half-ice in-house league at Iceworks in Aston, PA.

Our Squirt teams consist of players with birth year 2011 and under. The teams are independent and our scheduler sets up games with area teams of similar age and skill. All games are played at full ice. Home games are at the Skating Club of Wilmington and there is limited travel (within one hour) to area rinks for Away games. The practices are fast-moving with multiple stations teaching many various hockey skills. We typically play one game a week throughout the season. We always strive to win, but the emphasis is placed on developing hockey skills (skating, passing, agility, balance, etc.) as well as intangibles such as teamwork, character-building, and most importantly, having fun!

Our Middle School teams consist of players in grades 6 through 8. These teams are a member of the Delaware Middle School Hockey League (DMSHL). Home games are at the Skating Club of Wilmington and there is limited travel (typically within one hour) to area rinks for Away games.  Participating teams are from northern and southern Delaware, the eastern shore of Maryland, and southeastern PA. We also play non-league games against various DVHL teams at an appropriate level.

These teams are not bound to a specific school or district. Any Middle School student looking for a fun place to play hockey and continue to develop their skills is welcome to join!

Our goals are to:

  • Provide a fun developmental program for Middle School aged players in the Tri State area

  • Provide a rewarding and challenging experience for children looking to play the competitive sport of ice hockey

  • Promote the idea that children should be focusing on the values of working together in a team environment. To focus less on winning and losing and more on character and personal development

  • To educate the players to the notion of giving back to their communities, by aligning ourselves to the values of children’s organizations in the area

We are planning to field a High School team consisting of players in grades 9 through 12 for the 2021-2022 season. Our current plan is to be an independent team playing other clubs and schools of similar skill and age. We want to provide an opportunity for our existing Nighthawks players (and anyone who wishes to join us) to have a place to play consistent with the values and goals of our program through the lower levels.

This team will NOT be bound to a specific school or district. Traditionally our kids reside within the Brandywine School District or attend various private or parochial schools in the area. We welcome anyone wishing to join and play hockey with the Nighthawks!
